I grew up in Georgia and spent my childhood learning folk songs on the ukulele. I eventually advanced to the acoustic guitar and immersed myself in the popular music of my day. I also had a deep interest in country, bluegrass and r&b music. All these genres touched me and influence the music I make today.
Like many musicians, I moved to Nashville with big dreams and aspirations. I met Scott Roley, at the time a Christian singer, now Senior Pastor at Christ Community Church, and he became my first friend in Nashville. In 1984 Scott introduced me to the Nashville Rescue Mission. He was going to sing some songs and invited me to join him. I wasn’t familiar with this “Mission” so out of curiosity, I tagged along.
I remember singing “Amazing Grace” and hearing the men sing along. During this time I was touring with Jerry Reed as part of his band. The reception I received at the Mission moved me more than any I’d received at the concerts I’d played.
I loved the experience. It humbled me in a good way. I had abused drugs and alcohol and realized I could have headed down the same path as many of the men I saw sitting in those seats. In that moment, God showed me how he works in the lives of people who are “the least of these.”

I looked back and considered all the bad choices I’d made—both before and after accepting Christ. I realized without His grace, I didn’t have a leg to stand on and neither did these guys. I’m a sinner saved by grace. As I sang “I Need Thee Every Hour,” I knew it was truer than ever before.
I’ve been back to the Mission many times. I’m always encouraged. They are on the cutting edge of what it takes to help men and women recover—in mind, body, soul and spirit. They are changing lives.
I’m proud to support an organization that is helping people find their place in the world. I want to support the Mission in as many ways as I can. It’s so easy to help out, whether it’s singing a song, sharing the Gospel, serving a meal or writing a check.
The Nashville Rescue Mission has a heart for the suffering and is doing an amazing job of meeting the needs of those hurting in our community.
