Melissa Joan Hart – Mission is a beacon of hope

Nashville Rescue Mission’s 70 years of service to those experiencing hunger, homelessness, and hurt couldn’t happen without radical hospitality—like that of Melissa Joan Hart, who has brought smiles to young and old through award-winning performances and starring roles in sitcoms like Clarissa Explains It All and Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

I first heard about Nashville Rescue Mission in Sunday school. As a family, we try to get as involved as we can in different ways. We pray for the Mission and the people it serves.

We’ve hosted water drives, brought friends to tour the facilities, and helped fundraise with my husband’s gym—BFT in Brentwood. [The funds were] to help the new Women’s Campus to build out their gym facility for the Life Recovery Program ladies.

I also organize our high school football team’s community outreach program. I’ve had the boys come serve dinner, which was wonderful and a great way to give back. It’s important for these young people to see the face of homelessness.

Serving at Nashville Rescue Mission and getting involved reminds us that there are human beings who can’t catch a break, who deserve respect and hope for a better future.

My uncle was a veteran who turned to hard drugs that weakened his heart, which eventually led to a debilitating stroke that left him in an even worse condition with no one to care for him. He spent a year on the streets . . . until we found him and took him in. So I recognize that being homeless can be a series of unfortunate events with no way out.

Nashville Rescue Mission is a Christian organization that provides food and shelter. But they offer so much more . . .

Their Life Recovery Program truly looks at all the angles to help people get back on their feet. From rehab, to therapy, to high school diplomas and job opportunities, they help residents overcome obstacles that are keeping them from a bright, successful future.

The Mission is a beacon of hope and Jesus’ love for us. It is my wish that every person would feel compelled by the Spirit to serve once a month at the Mission as a way to wash the feet of our fellow man the way Jesus did for his disciples.

Join Melissa Joan Hart in helping our neighbors who are facing hunger, homelessness, and hopelessness by making a gift to provide meals, help, and hope this Thanksgiving season, and all year long!
