“I can’t do this,” said Antonio, the first day he walked into Nashville Rescue Mission.
Closed Doors
Antonio got behind on paying his rent and utilities. He started calling all his friends and family, but no one had room for him. “Every door was closed to me. Every door that is, except for the one to Nashville Rescue Mission.”
“Sleeping in a dorm with other men was not something I enjoyed. I found it hard to sleep, but I was extremely grateful to have a safe place to sleep, food to eat and clean clothes to wear.”
Life-Changing
“Honestly, after that first night, I never expected
to stay, much less make friends, find a job and one day be able to move back in to my own place. God is good. He has blessed me.” After arriving at the Mission, Antonio met with a case manager, who assisted him in making plans for the future.
“When I learned about the Mission’s Guest Volunteer Program (GVP), I immediately signed up,” says Antonio. As part of GVP, he volunteers his time rolling blankets for the guests and cutting hair. In addition to food, clothing and shelter, Antonio also receives free laundry service and has an assigned bed every night.
No Worries
“This program has provided me with the opportunity to find a job, go to work and save money. I’m moving forward with my life. I’m trying to get back on my feet and move into my own place,” says Antonio. “Just knowing I have a safe place to sleep at night brings peace and comfort. Instead of worrying I can focus on working. I’ve also had the opportunity to grow closer to the Lord.”
“If a person wants to help themselves, there is more help at the Mission than you could ever need…and
it’s free. The Mission is especially helpful in situations where you are on your own and don’t have family or friends who can help. It might
take time to adjust to
the environment, but the programs and services the Mission offers makes it so worth it.”
New Family
Antonio has found a great church home. He’s made friends at the Mission and at church that he now considers family. “The past is behind me,” says Antonio. “The future is bright. I’m looking forward to living in my own apartment. I might be moving on and moving out, but the Mission won’t be able to get rid of me so easily. I want to volunteer and give back. The Bible says, to whom much is given, much is required. Well I know I’ve been blessed beyond measure and I can’t wait to give back.”
