And how you can help
Wrapped in two blankets and lots of layers, William, an Army vet, said he is as comfortable as he is probably going to get tonight—lying on a heat grate near 2nd Avenue and Broadway. “This is my home,” he said. “The wind doesn’t bother me anymore. I guess I’ve gotten used to it.”
William’s story isn’t that different from many of the homeless living on the streets of Nashville. On any given night, there are an estimated 4,000 homeless in the city of Nashville.
So what does a homeless person do to survive?
» Sit at a coffee shop until asked to leave
» Sleep on someone’s couch
» Take shelter in their car (if they have one)
» Sleep in a tent
» Panhandle
» Curl up on a city sidewalk heat grate
» Dumpster dive
» Seek help at the Mission
