As Nashville’s Mayor, I always look forward to the “Great Thanksgiving Banquet” at the Nashville Rescue Mission. On this occasion I have the privilege of sharing a few words at the Mission’s life-recovery program graduation before joining other volunteers from all walks of life to serve men, women and children a traditional Thanksgiving meal.

 

I am always moved by the genuineness of the volunteers. Parents, children, neighbors, friends and many others from across our city graciously give their time to serve those who are hungry, and they do it with kindness and compassion.

 

Although the Nashville Rescue Mission will serve thousands of meals to the hungry during the “Great Thanksgiving Banquet,” their efforts aren’t just limited to the holidays. Throughout the year the staff and volunteers at the Mission work diligently to improve the lives of hungry, homeless and hurting men, women and children in Middle Tennessee.

 

 

The Mission provides an invaluable service to the city of Nashville. Their tireless efforts in helping the most vulnerable citizens in Nashville find a way off the streets impact our city in ways most people will never know. The men, women and children who arrive at the Mission’s doors find help, hope and healing. Addictions are overcome. Men and women rejoin the work force. Families are reunited. Each one of those lives healed has the potential to touch and to improve another life.

 

When families reconcile, communities and neighborhoods become stronger and that makes our city stronger. I am honored and humbled to serve such a great city and its citizens. I am proud of the people of Nashville and their volunteer spirit. I firmly believe our best days are ahead of us—especially when organizations like the Nashville Rescue Mission are making such a positive impact on the lives of so many. Nashville is a better city because of their efforts.
