SUPPORTER SPOTLIGHT – Interview with LeEllen Phillips, VP & Treasurer of Ingram Industries Inc., and Vice Chair of the Mission’s Board of Directors

How did you first get involved with Nashville Rescue Mission?

I first got involved with Nashville Rescue Mission as part of an internship with Nashville’s Young Leaders Council. I had already learned of the Mission through my church. But after expressing my interest in the board internship, I went on the Mission’s “I Had No Idea Tour,” where I learned more about the organization. On this tour, I learned Nashville Rescue Mission is so much more than a shelter for the homeless. It’s a place of hope.

In your opinion, what is the most important thing the Mission does for the Nashville community?

The Mission provides a safe space for those who need temporary shelter, a meal—or maybe they just need a new start. Also, the Mission’s Life Recovery Program is a fantastic program. It is a free space to help people who need to overcome an addiction get their lives back on track.

What prompted your first financial gift to the Mission?

Shortly after starting my board internship, I had the opportunity to attend the Mission’s annual Hearts of Hope event in February. During that event, I heard testimonies from women whose lives had been radically changed by their time in the Mission’s Life Recovery Program. It was then that I realized how alike we all are. We’ve all faced struggles—some more than others—but we all struggle.

Also, since joining the Board, I decided to become a Partner of Hope. Through the Mission’s Partners of Hope program, I make monthly contributions to support their work.

I also like to encourage donations of time, and when COVID is in the rearview mirror, I hope more of those opportunities become available.

What would you tell someone who is thinking bout making a gift to the Mission?

The Mission accepts donations, not just for men but also for women and children, including toys. Their donation center is located at their Main Campus on Lafayette Street, and it’s open Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The Mission also has Amazon Wish Lists they post on their site and update with their greatest needs throughout the year. You can buy directly off the list and have your items shipped straight to the Mission.

Also, if someone is planning to make a monetary donation to the Mission, I would want them to know that their gift will go towards more than just meals. It will restore people’s lives—it can and will help restore broken hearts and broken families. Plus, it’s more than just a gift towards the now. It’s an investment in someone’s future— their hope for tomorrow and for eternity.
